We had 4 tables set up in a circle around the perimeter of the hall with portfolio boards with people’s art on it. There were a couple rows of chairs set up in the middle of the room facing the stage for people to sit and enjoy performances. There was a long table full of painting supplies and canvases for people to have a go at creating their own artworks! Catering was also set up at the back of the hall for people to enjoy while the event ran. We had a total of 4 performers, performing throughout the event (3 hours) who each sang/played guitar for around 20 minutes each. When people weren’t performing, we also had a playlist playing in the background to add to the atmosphere of the event. We started off strong with a duet from Zia (vocals) and Allie (guitar), then a solo performance from Saye, a duet by Caitlyn (vocals) and Jay (guitar), and lastly Maya (vocals) and Jay (guitar). Throughout the event, people looked at the displayed artworks, engaged in our “give it a go” art table, and enjoyed the catering provided. The music and art worked well together, and neither overpowered the other throughout the event.
The purpose of this event was to give youth an opportunity to showcase their talent in art and music, in a comfortable and inviting space. The value of this was to make young people proud of their work and encourage them to persist in their strengths. We believe that this project was a valuable experience because it managed to attract a wide range of youth who felt more confident about sharing their talents after having experienced our event. Therefore, empowering the youth, and promoting the amazing work the AEYB does.
